The Work

Gravel drives and paths in Upper Norwood

Gravelling across Upper Norwood and the streets around it. What follows is how the job runs wherever we are; what changes from one Upper Norwood address to the next is access, and that is what we come and look at before quoting.

Two things decide whether a gravel surface still looks right in five years: what sits underneath it, and what stops it escaping at the edges.

Neither is visible once the job is finished, which is why gravel quotes vary so much between one contractor and the next.

  • Excavation to a depth that suits the use, deeper for a drive than a path
  • A compacted sub-base under anything that will carry a car
  • Weed-suppressing membrane across the full area, lapped at the joins
  • Edging set to hold the stone in
  • Angular gravel laid to depth and raked level

What We Do

What gravelling covers

The parts of the job, and what each of them is actually for.

1

Dig out

Down to a firm formation. A path needs less depth than a drive that has to take the weight of a car.

2

Sub-base and compact

On drives, crushed stone goes in and gets whacked down in layers. Skip this and the drive ruts where the wheels sit.

3

Membrane

Laid across the whole area with the sheets lapped, so weeds cannot come through the joins and the gravel cannot work down into the soil.

4

Set the edges

Timber, metal or a block course, set to hold the stone. This is what stops gravel migrating into your borders.

5

Gravel and rake

Angular stone spread to depth and raked off level. Around 40mm on a drive, so it does not rut and it still walks comfortably.

The Price

Gravelling costs in Upper Norwood

Dig depth is set by whether cars will go on it, and that is the single biggest item in the price. It is settled on site along with the edging and the spoil, then you get the figure in writing. The visit costs nothing.

  • Area and dig depth, which is set by whether cars go on it.
  • Whether a compacted sub-base is needed, which it is for any driveway.
  • How much spoil comes out and has to be carted away.
  • Edging type, from treated timber up to a block border.
  • Stone choice. Local aggregates cost less than a specified decorative gravel.

Why Choose Us

Why Upper Norwood calls us back

  • The price comes after we have seen it

Access decides most of what a tree job costs, and you cannot see access down a phone line. Someone comes and looks, then you get a figure in writing that does not move on the day.

  • We finish the job the same day we start it

The chipper runs alongside the cutting, so there is no stack of brash left by the gate waiting on a second visit.

  • Trees and grounds from one team

The same crew fells the tree, washes the patio it was dropping on, and lays the turf afterwards. You are not chasing three different trades to finish one garden.

  • You are told when something is a bad idea

Conifers cut past the green never recover. Gravel over bare soil sinks. Where a job will not give you what you are hoping for, we say so before quoting, not after.

  • You do not pay until you are happy with it

No deposit up front, and nothing asked for until the work is finished and you have checked it over. There is a fourteen day cooling off period on top of that.

FAQs

Upper Norwood gravelling questions

What size gravel is best for a driveway?

Angular stone at 10mm to 20mm. The sharp faces lock together and stay put. Rounded pea shingle looks lovely and rolls out from under the tyres within a season.

How deep should driveway gravel be?

Around 40mm over a proper sub-base. Deeper than that and it feels like walking on sand and tyres dig in; much shallower and the membrane shows through in the wheel tracks.

Will weeds come through?

Far fewer, with membrane underneath. What does eventually appear is usually seed blown onto the top of the gravel rather than anything coming up from below, and it pulls out easily.

Do I need planning permission for a gravel drive?

Gravel is a permeable surface, so a front drive laid in gravel does not normally need permission where a sealed one might. Check with your council for the specifics of your property.

Will the gravel need topping up?

A little, eventually. Stone works down into the sub-base under the wheel tracks over a few years, and a bag or two brings it back level. With edging set properly and the right angular stone, that is maintenance rather than a repair.

Can gravel be laid over an existing driveway?

Sometimes, if the existing surface is sound and there is height to spare at the thresholds and the damp course. It saves the dig, but it still needs edging to hold the stone and enough depth to cover. We will say on site whether yours will take it.
