The Work

New lawns and turf laying in Hampstead

Turfing across Hampstead and the streets around it. What follows is how the job runs wherever we are; what changes from one Hampstead address to the next is access, and that is what we come and look at before quoting.

Turf will root into almost anything for the first fortnight, then tell you the truth about what is underneath. Lay it over compacted subsoil and you get a lawn that yellows in the first dry spell and puddles all winter.

So the ground comes first. Old turf off, the level sorted, topsoil where it is needed, and a firm, raked bed to lay onto.

  • Old lawn or vegetation stripped and taken away
  • Ground rotavated or forked over where it has been compacted
  • Levels corrected, and topsoil brought in where there is not enough
  • Bed firmed and raked to a fine tilth before laying
  • Turf laid in a staggered bond, joints closed up, edges cut to your borders
  • Watered in on the day

What We Do

What turfing covers

The parts of the job, and what each of them is actually for.

1

Strip

The old lawn comes off rather than getting buried, so the new turf is not rooting into dead thatch.

2

Break up and level

Compacted ground gets opened up, then the levels are worked out and set. This is the part that decides how the lawn drains.

3

Topsoil and tread

Topsoil where the depth is short, then the bed is firmed by foot so it does not sink into hollows later.

4

Rake and lay

A fine rake, then turf laid in a staggered bond with the joints pushed tight so they knit rather than dry out and open.

5

Cut and water

Edges cut to your borders and the whole lawn watered in before we go.

The Price

Turfing costs in Hampstead

Most of the cost sits in the groundwork rather than the turf itself, so the levels and whatever is under the old lawn decide the figure. That means standing on the ground and checking it. Free on-site quote, in writing, no obligation.

  • Area, and how much old lawn has to come off and go away.
  • How far out the levels are, and whether topsoil has to be brought in.
  • Access for barrows. Turf is heavy and every roll is carried.
  • Turf grade. A hard-wearing family lawn and a fine ornamental one are not the same price.

Why Choose Us

Why Hampstead calls us back

  • The price comes after we have seen it

Access decides most of what a tree job costs, and you cannot see access down a phone line. Someone comes and looks, then you get a figure in writing that does not move on the day.

  • We finish the job the same day we start it

The chipper runs alongside the cutting, so there is no stack of brash left by the gate waiting on a second visit.

  • Trees and grounds from one team

The same crew fells the tree, washes the patio it was dropping on, and lays the turf afterwards. You are not chasing three different trades to finish one garden.

  • You are told when something is a bad idea

Conifers cut past the green never recover. Gravel over bare soil sinks. Where a job will not give you what you are hoping for, we say so before quoting, not after.

  • You do not pay until you are happy with it

No deposit up front, and nothing asked for until the work is finished and you have checked it over. There is a fourteen day cooling off period on top of that.

FAQs

Hampstead turfing questions

When can I walk on a new lawn?

Keep off it for the first two to three weeks while it roots. After that, normal use is fine, though it is worth going easy through the first summer.

How much watering does new turf need?

A lot, and this is the part that makes or breaks it. Water it daily for the first fortnight unless it rains properly, enough to wet the soil under the turf rather than just the grass.

When should the first cut be?

Once it has rooted, usually two to three weeks in, when a gentle tug on a corner does not lift it. Take the mower up high for the first couple of cuts.

Can you turf at any time of year?

Autumn and spring are easiest, because the turf establishes while there is moisture about. Summer turfing works, but only if you can commit to the watering.

Can new turf go straight over an old lawn?

No, and this is where most disappointing lawns come from. Laying over dead grass and thatch gives the roots nothing to knit into, so it looks fine for a month and then yellows off. The old lawn comes up first, every time.

Will the joins between the turves show?

For the first few weeks, yes. Laid tight in a staggered bond and kept watered, the roots knit across and the seams close up inside a month. Joins that stay visible are usually a sign the turf dried out early on.
